Introducing: Working Architecture

So you want to be an architect?

Great! You have found a field with a rich history, that will be useful for all time, and unlikely to be completely replaced by AI.

You have likely already completed a top notch architecture program or are currently studying. That is an excellent step 1! But if you’re like any other graduate with a shiny new BArch or even MArch degree, you’re struggling to find work at a real life architecture firm. Heck, maybe you can’t even get an interview.

What gives?

Welcome to our blog series, Working Architecture.

We will explore everything from applications, to interviews, to being on the job to help you get started in this field that you love. Let’s face it, if all you wanted was to make millions of dollars, you’d have chosen something else but you did not pull all nighters at university just to end up surveying buildings for the rest of your life!

You want to design! You deserve to contribute to the fabric of your city; the beauty of a new home, the preservation of historic structures, the functionality of institutions, the adaptability of commercial spaces. Which brings us to the all important question of “Why?”

Why do you want to work in architecture, as an architect or get a job in an architectural related field? What is it that you think you will get out of it? What do you want your day to day life to look like?

If you want to spend every minute sketching, dreaming up artistic designs, and directing construction, you may find yourself a bit disappointed. Being a working architect involves so much more than actually designing architecture. A huge portion of the work is navigating city agencies, code review, client coordination, budgeting and business management. Even when it comes to the design work, for every beautiful foyer, there is electrical and plumbing behind the walls.

All this is not said to discourage you, young designer, but to help you understand what the work actually entails before you dive in headfirst.

So, why DO you want to be an architect? What motivated you to start? Get clear on WHY and then we can get started on how to get there.
