Midcentury Modern Sanctuary Transformed in New Haven

BEKI Sanctuary Renovation

New Haven, Connecticut

We’re proud to share new photos from our recent synagogue renovation at Beth El – Keser Israel (BEKI), a Conservative shul serving the Jewish community in New Haven’s Westville neighborhood. This project reimagines the sanctuary’s front wall and podium, blending thoughtful synagogue architecture with accessibility and acoustic flexibility.

Working closely with the rabbi and BEKI’s building committee, we developed a new front wall that ties into the synagogue’s midcentury modern design. The space now features:

  • White marble-pattern porcelain tile and rift-sawn red oak panels

  • Angled marble walls that open toward the congregation

  • Accessible ramps - discreetly integrated behind benches and planters

  • A movable acoustic wall at the rear for spatial flexibility

At the heart of the sanctuary is a new ark—multicolored acrylic and brass doors and transom designed by Amy Reichert—framed by stepped wood panels and LED cove lighting. The result is a kinetic focal point that draws the eye and uplifts the spirit, enhancing the overall synagogue design.

The project’s success is thanks to the deep involvement of BEKI’s building committee, with interior designer Lynn Brotman serving as in-house consultant. Their commitment helped shape a space that’s both reverent and radiant—a meaningful contribution to the Jewish community and its architectural heritage.

We invite you to explore the new photos on the project page and celebrate this transformation with us. This synagogue renovation is a testament to what thoughtful design and community collaboration can achieve.
