John Field, Architect & Founding Partner of Building Studio Architects in New York City

John Field | MA & AIA

Founding Partner, Building Studio Architects

John joined Building Studio Architects as a partner 25 years ago. Born in Boston and raised in New York, he studied Engineering at Columbia University and holds a BFA and BArch from the Rhode Island School of Design, as well as a Master of Industrial Design from Pratt Institute.

Before joining BSA, John founded Field Design, where he combined his multidisciplinary training into a hands-on design practice. He also served as a senior associate with architect Myron Goldfinger, FAIA, and taught Industrial Design as an adjunct professor at Pratt. The merger of Field Design with Building Studio Architects brought a new dimension to the firm, allowing it to expand its portfolio and serve a broader client base—ranging from residential renovations to large-scale commercial developments.

John’s expertise lies at the intersection of art, architecture, and infrastructure. His early focus on residential design has since grown to include landlord services, corporate interiors, and new construction. His cross-disciplinary background gives him a unique ability to lead complex teams and manage consultant coordination on some of the firm’s most significant projects. He also guides Building Studio’s collaborations with major property management firms, offering strategic expertise in navigating regulatory approvals, including the New York City Landmarks process.

John has over 30 years of experience in design and construction in New York City. Beyond architecture, he brings a deep understanding of carpentry, building systems, and infrastructure. Personal interests include sailing and anything involving boats. Always fixing or restoring a vintage “something,” John is a mechanic and boatbuilder, taking pride in his vintage Alpine. He spends his free time on the water—even in winter—racing small sailboats, a sport known as “frostbiting.”
